Getting an old couch out of the house is mostly a lifting problem. It has to come down the stairs, around the corners and out the door without taking the paint with it. For couch removal in Hamilton you have two routes: book the City's bulk pickup, or send us a short request and we pass it to a vetted local junk removal crew who carries it out for you.
The City of Hamilton bulk pickup
The City picks up furniture as bulk garbage. You book it online or by phone, and it is collected on your regular collection day. The City's rules say:
- A maximum of four items per booking.
- Each item can weigh no more than 90 kg (200 lb) and be no longer than 1.2 m (4 ft).
- Sofa beds and recliners must be tied so they don't unfold.
- Items must be at the curb by 7 am on pickup day.
- Online booking is for single family homes and buildings of five units or fewer with curbside pickup. Town homes can't use the online service.
- Online requests are collected on your collection day two weeks later.

When a crew makes more sense
- You can't carry the couch to the curb yourself, or it is in a basement or upstairs.
- It is a sectional or a sleeper sofa that is over the size or weight limit.
- You live in a town home or an apartment without curbside pickup.
- You want it gone sooner than the next booking slot, or you have more than four items.
Ask the crew where the couch goes afterwards. Some items can be donated if they are in good shape.
Bed bugs?
If the couch has bed bugs, tell the crew before they come. The City also requires furniture with signs of bed bugs to be wrapped and sealed in plastic before it goes to the curb.
